RISE UP & RISE TOGETHER
I'm Shaun Brown, the Democratic Candidate for Virginia's 2nd Congressional District. I am a progressive Democrat, business woman, community activist, and the choice for change this November.
I couldn't help but smile as I travelled back from the Democratic National Committee Convention in Philadelphia, where I served as a Virginia state delegate for Bernie Sanders. I reflected at how moving the experience was: seeing a teary-eyed Larry Sanders cast the vote for his brother in the name of their parents. Could those Jewish refugees, who fled the Holocaust with nothing, have even imagined that they would raise a son that would one day be a serious candidate for the Presidency of the United States? We could only imagine how proud they would have been. It made me proud to be an American, and the moment was a great testament to the promise of what our country can be. It was also a stark contrast to the message we heard from Cleveland the week before at the RNC convention.
I was proud to have served as a delegate for Senator Sanders, and I appreciate all the work that he has done to energize and bring people into the political process. I am also proud of all the effort that his supporters have done to transform the platform of the Democratic Party into one of the most progressive ones in our country's history: a call for criminal justice and tuition reform, Social Security expansion, a living wage, and a call to reform the economic policies of the past 30 years that have favored corporations and the super-wealthy over struggling, working class Americans. People all across the Commonwealth have come together this primary season to ensure that their voices be heard, and we have built a Revolution that is just beginning.
We will not allow the business of government to continue as usual, where politicians are beholden to their corporate donors. We will represent the people of Virginia's 2nd District, not the special interests and donors. I intend to spend my time in Washington fighting for change, not phoning in favors.
I stood in solidarity with Senator Sanders as he called for Democratic unity and declared that Hillary Clinton must become the next President of the United States. I was honored to be present later that week as Secretary Clinton become the first major-party candidate for President in our nation's history. I was especially honored that Virginia's own, former Governor and Senator, Tim Kaine, was chosen as Clinton's running mate. It is the first time in over a hundred years that Virginia has been represented on the Presidential ticket, and shows how crucial our state will be this November.
I am issuing a CALL TO ACTION to all independents and Republicans to join with us to oppose the hatred, bigotry, and sexism spewing daily from the mouth of Donald Trump, and to fight the counterproductive economic policies being advocated by conservative GOP leaders like Paul Ryan, as well as my opponent, Scott Taylor.
We must not allow the work that we have accomplished over the past seven years to be undone by allowing the White House to fall under control of the same party that has done nothing but obstruct since the say Obama took office. Furthermore, we must do everything we can to pick up as many seats in Congress as we can.
We must build a movement to mobilize, energize and build a winning coalition in Washington. In my People, Power, Planet and Justice Platform, I support economic opportunity for Virginia's 2nd District families, protect retirement security. I oppose TPP and all trade agreements that ship out Virginia jobs. I support a $15 minimum living wage, wall street reform, energy independence, and union rights over so-called "right to work" laws. I plan to support our veterans by prioritizing their health and well-being over the interests of defense contractors. And I will never stop fighting against economic, social and environmental injustices as I have done my entire life.
I was inspired by Senator Sanders to run for Congress, and I proudly waved an American flag I received at President Obama's 2008 Inauguration as Hillary Clinton accepted the Democratic Nomination for President. I stand with her to continue Obama's legacy, and stand with Senator Sanders to enact the platform approved last month, calling for income and social equality whether you are a child, student, senior, veteran, military family, small business owner or member of the LGBTQ community.
And that's why I'm asking for your support for Virginia's 2nd Congressional district; we must all stand together. Our future depends on it. We have won significant social victories over the past few years that we must preserve with a Democratic victory on November 8th when Hillary Clinton wins the Presidency. And that is why I am asking for your vote. I hope that we can rise together and get our message out to as many people as possible in the remaining days to the election. Our fight is only beginning.
With your help, I will become Virginia's first African American congresswoman. We will win because we know history is in our hands. It has always been. A rising tide may lift all boats, but we must make sure that everyone is on board, not left behind on the docks as the ship of Progress sails away. With your help, we will rise together and steer our ship to victory on November 8th.
